So many readers asked me to make a DIY chunky knit blanket tutorial for the blanket I recently posted on IG. I was so excited to have such a huge response, and loved getting feedback on what you all want to see!

I’ve been in love with these blankets for years, but they are SO expensive, especially if it’s real merino wool. I finally decided to make a blanket with the faux super chunky wool to stay within my budget. For months, I tried to find the chunky yarn in craft shops and finally gave up, but I stumbled upon it walking around Michael’s the other day.

Michael’s yarn is not merino wool; it’s a mix of cotton, polyester, and wool. In case you don’t have a Michael’s nearby, I also saw it online at Hobby Lobby and Joann’s Fabrics. They had a buy 1 get 1 deal, and I jumped on it! I purchased 4 spools of yarn to make a 40×60 sized blanket for only $78.

This style blanket has some stretch to it, so even though it’s a 40×60, it’s even bigger with the stretch. It’s perfect for a cozy, over-sized look!

Hand Knitting:

I watched a lot of videos about how to hand knit blankets. While many of them were good, Broadwick Fibers’ braided method worked best with faux merino yarn. Their method also utilizes a flat surface for the whole process, which makes everything simpler. I also included a clip on how to join the yarn bundles together, because most videos I watched didn’t show how to do this.

>Four spools or 4000 grams yarn/wool

>A large flat surface

>Coffee (of course) and a good TV show!
